A captivating blend of puppetry and circus art, followed by an engaging talk on creativity and a 30-month global performance journey.
Drawing inspiration from Spain’s vibrant performances, ‘The Orange Box’ is a developmental show paying homage to captivating artistry. With spirited circus acts, intricate puppet craftsmanship, and enchanting illusions — from hand puppets to marionettes and shadow puppets to the mesmerizing artistry of contact juggling and buugeng. Beyond entertainment, it carries a profound message, inviting us to step outside the box where true magic unfolds. Join Ana and Sergio for an ‘Artists Talk’ after the show, delving into their global puppetry and circus journey. Be part of this one-of-a-kind adventure transcending the ordinary, opening doors to the extraordinary.
In 2011 Ana and Sergio created the puppet and circus company Naranjarte, in Madrid, Spain. They performed in several puppet festivals in Spain, France, U.K. and Holland. From September 2017 until January 2020 they traveled around the world researching and developing a programme for language teaching and communication through puppetry and circus. Alongside learning and teaching, they performed over 200 shows to delighted audiences around the globe. They excitedly share their knowledge in the arts of juggling, clown and puppetry, and promote the innovative use of these performing arts in education, in their chosen home - Aotearoa/NZ.
Sergio is the co-creator of Naranjarte. Sergio’s specialist skills include clowning, contact juggling, poi, stick, diabolo and buugeng (a combination of the Japanese words for ‘martial arts’ and ‘illusion’). Sergio completed his training in Circus Studies, at Carampa Circus School, Madrid, Spain. Sergio is the juggler for “Wonderkind”, by Wonderlight Theatre Aotearoa, and performed at Capital E National Arts Festival “Bite-Size Treats (2023).
Ana is the co-creator of Naranjarte. Ana makes all the exquisite handcrafted puppets in Naranjarte’s shows. Ana is a professional puppeteer with a Master’s level Diploma in Puppetry (UK), and she completed her Drama studies in Cuarta Pared School, Madrid, Spain. Ana is also a qualified and registered teacher in NZ, and a passionate researcher. Ana was the co-creator, performer and puppeteer of “Wonderkind”, by Wonderlight Theatre Aotearoa, and performed at Circa Theatre (2022), and also at Capital E National Arts Festival “Bite-Size Treats” (2023).
Ana and Sergio deliver workshops about puppetry and juggling around NZ, under the Creative Communities Scheme fund.
