Call for Sponsorship for Plays for the Young

Each year Playmarket runs a Plays for the Young competition. Playwrights can submit scripts for any of three categories, and a winner is awarded in each category. The categories are: plays written for children aged 3–8 years, children 8–12 years, or teenagers.

This is an invaluable opportunity for playwrights to create new work for young people and grow the canon of contemporary New Zealand plays available for schools, community theatres and performing arts professionals working with and for rangatahi and tamariki. Currently, unlike playwriting competitions such as Playwrights B4 25 and The Adam NZ Play Award (both of which have sponsorship), Plays for the Young has no prize money attached to it. PAYPA is keen to support Plays for the Young by finding sponsors or philanthropists to offer prize money for the winner in each category.

PAYPA (Performing Arts & Young People Aotearoa) supports and advocates for artists who are making work for young New Zealanders. The Performing Arts and Young People sector is struggling in the current economic climate and one way PAYPA is addressing this is by undertaking a variety of activities to ensure greater recognition of quality performing arts work for young people.

We believe that all young New Zealanders have the right to enjoy and participate in arts experiences created especially for, by or with them, that reflect their own lives, concerns and interests, and that are of the highest quality. Offering prize money will add significantly to the prestige of Plays for the Young and encourage the best of our playwrights to do their very best work for young people.

We are looking for a company, organisation or individual who would consider sponsoring one (or all) of the three categories in this competition. Ideally, we are looking for $1000 prize money in each category. Naming rights are available for ongoing sponsorship.

Please feel free to pass this request on to anyone who might be interested.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
