ASSITEJ International Meeting & Kijimuna Festa, Japan

The very first ASSITEJ International Meeting will take place in Okinawa City, JAPAN, from 28th July to 5th August 2012, in conjunction with Kijimuna Festa.ASSITEJ International Meetings are a new initiative for ASSITEJ, providing opportunities for members of the international ASSITEJ community to come together during the years between World Congresses (held every three years).Kijimuna Festa – International Theater Festival OKINAWA for Young Audiences – is an annual international performing arts festival for children and young people. The theme for this year’s Festa is “Theater: Nichigusui”. ‘Nuchigusui’ is a dialect of Okinawa, which means ‘healer of life’. The theme was chosen in response to last year’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The ASSITEJ International Meeting is an opportunity to establish practical and creative relationships between participants, including artists, producers, researchers and festival organisers. The programme will include seminars, symposiums, workshops and other social events around the theme of “Theater: Nuchigusui”, dealing with issues such as ‘theatre and disaster’, ‘peace-building’, ‘next generation’, ‘theatre and disability’ and ‘theatre for babies’.This 9 day long event will also offer you the finest productions of theatre, puppetry, dance and music from Japan, Asia and other parts of the world. The Festa also includes an “Art Market” where you can promote your work and activities, and discover what other artists, theatre companies and festivals are doing. Any artists, theatres, companies and festivals can be part of this market. Participation is free of charge. We’d love to see as many New Zealand practitioners as possible attending the Kijimuna Festa and inaugural ASSITEJ International meeting, especially our colleagues from Christchurch.
